Fears and Phobias

Everyone is born with two hard-wired fears and phobias: sudden loud noises and falling. Every other fear is learned and can easily be unlearned. Fears and phobias only become problems when they happen too often or their intensity affects your life.

When someone suffers a panic attack, it feels similar to a heart attack, going insane or losing control. During a panic attack, you may have physical symptoms, such as shortness of breath, tingling sensations, ringing in your ears, trembling, a feeling of choking, chest pain, sweating or heart pounding.

Panic attacks are usually activated by stressful situations, such as leaving home, relationship conflicts, or new responsibilities. A person starts developing 'hyper vigilance' (they focus excessively on physical sensations), which can result in an increase in the sensations and worry. In turn, this may produce a full-blown panic attack. A person can develop anticipatory anxiety (fear that panic attacks will continue to occur) and begin to avoid situations that give rise to such anxiety. Once avoidance of this associated symptom grows, it may develop into agoraphobia.

Sometimes it is useful to return to past experiences in order to emotionally remove ourselves from present-day ones. The cognitive process of understanding why you have the problem may take you back to your childhood, to find out the first time the 'incident' occurred. We will conduct this journey in a safe, controlled environment, which will lead to the event being relived to the point that it no longer has any emotional charge to it. In turn, this will lead to the fear or phobia going away.
